The UN observer mission Unifil in southern Lebanon has found no evidence of the pro-Iranian militia arming itself since a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into force.

"Since the agreement came into force last year, we have found no evidence of the import of new weapons, the development of new military infrastructure by non-state actors or military movements by non-state actors south of the Litani River," Unifil spokeswoman Kandice Ardiel told the German Press Agency (dpa).

The blue helmets are on the ground every day to monitor the situation. Before and during the open war, they had observed and reported the activities of non-state actors, including Hezbollah, in the operational area in southern Lebanon.

So far, the peacekeepers have discovered almost 400 weapons caches and infrastructure facilities, Ardiel said. They had been handed over to the state army. Abandoned weapons depots continue to be discovered. However, there are no indications that new weapons have entered the area of operation or that non-state actors have set up new military infrastructure there, said Ardiel.

A ceasefire has actually been in place between Hezbollah and Israel since the end of November last year. This also includes the disarmament of the militia and its withdrawal - in accordance with UN Resolution 1701 - behind the Litani River around 30 kilometers north of the Israeli-Lebanese border.

Israel continues to attack daily - hundreds dead

However, Israel accuses Hezbollah of reorganizing and rearming itself in the south of the country. The Israeli military continues to attack Lebanon on a daily basis. Since the ceasefire came into force, more than 300 people have been killed. According to UN figures, this includes more than 120 civilians. Hezbollah is considered to be severely weakened since the open war with Israel.

According to Hezbollah ally and parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri, 90 percent of Hezbollah's military infrastructure in the south has been dismantled so far. The remaining part will be completed by the end of the year.

The blue helmets of Unifil have been monitoring the border area between Israel and Lebanon since 1978 and are also responsible for monitoring the ceasefire.
