Following the fall of long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad in Syria, the British government has lifted several sanctions and released assets.

The 24 financial institutions and companies affected include the Syrian central bank Central Bank of Syria as well as several commercial banks, oil companies, refineries and the Syrian Arab Airlines.

The British did not provide any details on the background. In principle, financial sanctions were imposed on those who were or had been involved in the repression of the civilian population in Syria or who had supported the Syrian regime or benefited from it. The sanctions date back to the time before the UK left the EU.

The EU states had recently decided to gradually ease sanctions. A rebel alliance led by the Islamist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrew the long-term ruler in December. A transitional government is now in power in Damascus.
