Following Israel's fierce attacks on Palestinian militants, almost all residents have left the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. The Palestinian relief organization UNRWA speaks of around 30,000 people who have sought refuge in the area.

However, sources in the district gave lower numbers of residents who had fled and estimated the number of people remaining there at around 1,000. The Israeli army did not initially comment on this.
According to the UNRWA spokeswoman, around 100 buildings in the neighborhood were destroyed or severely damaged in heavy detonations on Sunday.
Jenin is considered a stronghold of militant Palestinians. Israel launched its largest military operation there for years on January 21. According to Israeli reports, around 50 militants have been killed in the airstrikes over the past few days. More than 100 wanted suspects have been arrested, dozens of weapons have been confiscated and hundreds of explosive devices have been destroyed. According to Palestinian reports, civilians were also killed.
