The attacks against IS leaders, fighters and camps in the center of the country are part of an ongoing mission to weaken and defeat IS, the U.S. Central Command, the regional command of the U.S. armed forces, announced on X. The aim is to prevent the terrorist group from carrying out operations and to ensure that IS does not take advantage of the current situation to re-establish itself in central Syria. Among others, B-52, F-15 and A-10 aircraft were involved in the operation against more than 75 targets.
In Syria, rebels captured the capital Damascus on Sunday after more than 13 years of civil war. President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia. It is unclear how the balance of power in the country will now develop.
According to the Department of Defense, the USA still has around 900 soldiers stationed in Syria. It was not clear from the statement where the airstrikes were flown from. The effects are now being investigated and there is no evidence of civilian casualties, the statement said. "There should be no doubt, we will not allow IS to regroup and take advantage of the current situation in Syria," said General Michael Erik Kurilla.
