The US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, is resigning from her post.

Brink had been ambassador in Kiev for three years - "three years during a war, an extraordinary achievement", said State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce at a press conference on Thursday (local time).

Bruce did not initially provide information on the exact timing of Brink's retirement or her successor. It was unclear whether the diplomat resigned voluntarily or was asked to do so by US President Donald Trump's administration.

Brink was nominated for the post in 2022 by Trump's predecessor Joe Biden shortly after the Russian attack on Ukraine. During her time as ambassador, she gained a reputation as a campaigner for reform and against corruption, wrote the New York Times. After Trump took office, however, she had to adapt to the White House's new, more "neutral" stance on the war in Ukraine.

Criticism from Kiev of reaction to Russian airstrike

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently criticized Brink for her reaction to a Russian airstrike in the city of Kryvyi Rih, in which nine children and teenagers were killed. In a post on X, Brink had not named Russia as the attacker. The reaction of the US embassy was surprisingly disappointing, Selenskyj wrote on X.

The resignation comes at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Kiev. The Trump administration has begun talks with Russia and Ukraine with the aim of ending the war. In recent weeks, however, Trump has taken a much more benevolent stance towards Russia than towards Ukraine.
