According to the US, a further round of talks between representatives of the hostile countries of Israel and Lebanon is to take place in Washington at the end of next week. This is scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, a US State Department official told the German Press Agency. He did not give any more specific details about the participants. A source from the Lebanese government told dpa that the USA is pushing for a de-escalation in Lebanon.

A ceasefire between the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia and Israel has been in place there for three weeks, but it is fragile. Hezbollah and Israel's army continue to attack each other.

Not the first talks in Washington

Most recently, there have already been two direct talks at ambassador level between Israel and Lebanon in Washington. Following a meeting between representatives of the two countries at the White House at the end of last month, US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire between the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and Israel by several weeks. The official ceasefire was about to expire at the time.

According to earlier statements by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel is seeking a permanent peace agreement with Lebanon through direct negotiations. Netanyahu is also calling for the disarmament of the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, which is allied with Iran and with which Israel has been at open war until recently.

The Lebanese government wants to achieve a permanent ceasefire and a withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from the south of Lebanon. According to Israel, it has established a so-called "security zone" there, while the Lebanese leadership speaks of occupation of Lebanese soil.
