The current Republican-led oversight committee in the US House of Representatives has far-reaching powers and can initiate investigations. Hillary Clinton received a subpoena from the committee for October 9 to testify there. Bill Clinton is scheduled to appear on October 14. Attorney General Bondi has been ordered to release records by August 19 if a court authorizes it. The aim is to press ahead with the investigation into the case of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019, according to the letters.
US media: hearings not open to the public
Several other ex-Ministers of Justice - including Jeff Sessions and Merrick Garland - as well as former FBI Directors Robert Mueller and James Comey were also subpoenaed. According to US media, the hearings are not public.
Epstein had systematically abused minors for many years. According to official reports, he committed suicide in his prison cell in 2019 at the age of 66. His long-time confidante Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for her role in setting up a sexual abuse ring for girls.
Epstein affair puts Trump under pressure
Epstein's death caused wild speculation in parts of US society because he had excellent contacts in American high society. Celebrities and billionaires came and went with him. US President Donald Trump also spent time with Epstein, as evidenced by several party videos. During the election campaign, the Republican had promised to open the Epstein files. Because he has not done so to date, pressure is growing - including from within his own ranks.
In recent weeks, Trump has tried to draw attention to one of his predecessors, Bill Clinton. A Clinton spokesperson let it be known back in 2019 that the Democrat had had no contact with Epstein for more than a decade and knew nothing about his crimes.
Explosive "WSJ" report
According to a report in the "Wall Street Journal", a birthday album for Epstein's 50th birthday contained a congratulatory letter from Trump as well as one from Clinton. Trump, for his part, denied being the author. According to the WSJ, the Clinton spokesperson declined to comment and referred to his earlier statement.
