The US government has approved further arms sales to Israel worth the equivalent of almost three billion euros. According to the US State Department, deliveries are to begin next year and continue until 2028. The usual review by Congress will be waived.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio invoked a controversial emergency clause that allows the US government to approve arms sales in urgent cases without prior parliamentary review. He justified the move on the grounds of US national security interests. The previous administration under President Joe Biden also made use of this clause.

The USA is Israel's most important protecting power. Critics are calling for more transparency about how US weapons are used by Israel and whether international humanitarian law is being observed.

The goods now approved include various types of ammunition and military equipment. The largest share is accounted for by bombs and related material worth around 2.04 billion US dollars (1.9 billion euros), including around 35,500 heavy aerial bombs. A further 675.7 million US dollars include additional ammunition, technical support and supplementary equipment. Armored bulldozers worth around 295 million US dollars are also to be supplied.
