Just over a week and a half after the disastrous talks in the White House, the USA has announced the immediate resumption of military and intelligence aid for Ukraine. This was announced by both sides after talks in the Saudi Arabian coastal city of Jeddah. For its part, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the USA - depending on Russia's willingness to take such a step.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio then said that his government would now present the offer to the Russians. "The ball is now in their court." Russia invaded the neighboring country a good three years ago.

Ukraine shows its gratitude

Following the meeting in the White House between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the US cut off military and intelligence aid to Ukraine on the grounds that Kiev was not showing enough will to negotiate peace. Zelenskyi was also attacked at the meeting for not showing enough gratitude for the American aid. In the statement, the Ukrainian delegation reaffirmed the "great gratitude" of the Ukrainian people to President Trump, the US Congress and the American people.

According to the statement, both sides agreed to form teams of negotiators and begin negotiations on a lasting peace that would provide Ukraine with long-term security. The USA had committed to discussing this with representatives of Russia. Ukraine emphasized that its European partners should be involved in the peace process.

Minerals agreement to follow

It was also agreed to conclude a comprehensive agreement on the development of Ukraine's important mineral resources as soon as possible. The agreement was originally supposed to be signed at the meeting in the White House that went wrong.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had already expressed optimism before the talks and announced that the Ukrainians could expect more US aid again if the negotiations went well. The head of the Ukrainian President's Office, Andriy Yermak, who is leading the Kiev delegation, was also optimistic: Kiev is counting on "very constructive, deep, friendly and cooperative talks" with the USA, he told journalists before the start of the talks.

Prior to the Jeddah round, Rubio had emphasized that diplomacy was the only solution to the war. Both sides must be aware that there is no military solution, he said. Russia could not conquer the whole of Ukraine and "obviously" it would be very difficult for Ukraine to push the Russians back to where they were in 2014 within a reasonable period of time. Rubio was probably referring to Ukraine's internationally recognized borders. According to information from the US State Department, Rubio spoke before the meeting about concessions that Ukraine would have to make.
