The US military says it has killed "up to" 35 members of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia in several attacks in Syria. The attacks targeted "several known IS camps" and various locations in the Syrian desert, the US Central Command announced. There was no evidence of civilian casualties.

IS, which once controlled large areas in Syria and neighboring Iraq, is considered militarily defeated in both countries. However, IS cells are still active in both countries. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by Kurdish militias, as well as Syrian government troops, supported by Russia, regularly take action against them.

IS cells are still capable of carrying out killings in a "security vacuum", "which clearly shows that the Islamic State is still alive and kicking", according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
