US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has threatened migrants who enter the US illegally and commit crimes with placement in the Cecot maximum security prison in El Salvador.

Noem visited the prison on Wednesday, to which the US had deported more than 200 Venezuelans in the middle of the month on the grounds that they were members of the Venezuelan criminal cartel Tren de Aragua.

During her visit, the Secretary of Homeland Security thanked the authoritarian Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele for the "partnership with the United States of America". This had made it possible to bring "terrorists" from the USA to El Salvador and imprison them there.

"I also want everyone to know that if you come to our country illegally, this is one of the consequences you could face," Noem said in a video shared on the X platform. A cell with dozens of detainees can be seen behind her. This facility is one of the instruments that the US will use if "crimes against the American people" are committed.

Human rights activists criticize the conditions in the mega-prison, which is designed to hold 40,000 prisoners, as intolerable. The recent deportation of Venezuelans from the USA to the prison has also caused a stir due to legal issues.
