The US development agency USAID is to be finally dismantled by July 1. This was announced to Congress by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Some of the remaining functions should be taken over by the department by then, and others that are not in line with the government's goals should be abandoned, Rubio wrote.

Unfortunately, the agency had long ago moved away from its original mission, the minister explained. The benefits have been too few and the costs too high. It is thanks to President Donald Trump that "this misguided and fiscally irresponsible era is now over". The foreign aid programs would be realigned according to what is best for the United States, the Secretary of State wrote.
The Trump administration had already begun dismantling USAID at the beginning of February. A federal judge then ruled in March that the "accelerated closure of USAID" probably violated the US Constitution in several respects.
USAID was one of the largest organizations of its kind in the world and organized numerous aid measures all over the world - from AIDS aid to reconstruction in war regions.
