With the support of four Republicans, the US Senate has voted in favor of greater control over the conduct of the war in Iran. For the first time, a majority of the chamber voted in favor of a law that gives Congress more say in the event of war.

According to the Senate, the vote was 50 to 47. However, even if both chambers vote in favor of the resolution, President Donald Trump could still veto it.
Republicans had previously voted against it in several votes in Congress, leaving the power to decide on the war with the President. The Democrats' aim is to end the Iran war with the motion.
The so-called War Powers Resolution was first used in response to the Vietnam War in 1973. According to this resolution, the President may only wage war on his own authority for 60 days and then requires the approval of Congress.
Republican unity is crumbling
The majority was made possible by four Republicans who broke with their party's line. Among them, Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana stands out in particular: he had voted against it in previous votes, but now changed his voting behavior after losing the primary in his state without Trump's support.
