"There are many topics for talks," Jermak wrote on his Telegram channel under the pictures of the arrival. These included defense, strengthening security, weapons and the expansion of cooperation between Ukraine and the USA.
While such visits are usually kept secret for security reasons, Kellogg announced the trip himself on Friday. Accordingly, the envoy of US President Donald Trump wants to stay in Ukraine for a week to get an idea of the situation on the ground and conduct negotiations.
Trump increasingly dissatisfied with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin
The visit could mark a turning point in the Trump administration's policy on the Ukraine conflict. Trump's predecessor Joe Biden had supported Ukraine in the Russian war of aggression that has been going on for more than three years. Trump, on the other hand, has so far seen himself as a mediator.
In order to achieve a swift end to the fighting, he has so far exerted pressure on Kiev by reducing arms deliveries, among other things. Recently, his public position towards Moscow has become more critical.
Kellogg is considered the politician in the Trump administration who is most likely to sympathize with Kiev. For his part, Trump himself has promised an "important statement" on Russia this Monday.
