In a joint operation by the Nigerian armed forces and the US military, 175 fighters from the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) have been "eliminated", according to Nigeria's defense headquarters. The joint airstrikes, which began a few days ago, have led to the destruction of IS control points, weapons depots, logistics centers, military equipment and financial networks of the terrorist organization.

According to President Donald Trump, the USA and Nigeria had already killed IS deputy chief Abu Bilal al-Minuki at the weekend. Last December, there was also an airstrike coordinated by both countries against IS in the northwest of the African country, which is inhabited roughly equally by Muslims and Christians. At the time, Trump emphasized that IS fighters had murdered Christians in Nigeria. However, the Nigerian Foreign Ministry stated that the focus of the airstrike was the fight against terrorism, not religion.

1000 US soldiers sent to Nigeria

In February, the USA then sent 100 soldiers to the north-east of the country to train and provide technical support to Nigerian soldiers in the fight against Islamist terrorists and other armed groups.

Several terrorist groups are active in the north and north-east of the West African country, including the Islamists of Boko Haram and IS offshoots. Northern Nigeria also borders the Sahel state of Niger, where several terrorist groups such as the Islamic State are also active.
