US President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor is calling on Iran to give up its nuclear program. In a TV interview, Mike Waltz spoke of a "complete dismantling" of the nuclear program. "All options are on the table, and it's time for Iran to completely abandon its pursuit of a nuclear weapon." If Tehran had nuclear weapons, the entire Middle East would explode in an arms race. "That is completely unacceptable for our national security." He did not want to reveal any further details about the "back and forth" with Tehran when asked.

A few weeks ago, Trump had written a letter to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with regard to possible nuclear negotiations. "I wrote them a letter saying that I hope you will negotiate, because if we have to take military action, it will be terrible," Trump said in an interview. According to Iranian media, the letter was personally delivered to the Iranian capital by an Arab mediator.
However, Khamenei reiterated his doubts about talks with Trump. During his first term in office, Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Vienna nuclear pact in 2018, which was intended to restrict Iran's nuclear program and lift sanctions in return. Tehran then no longer complied with the conditions of the agreement.
