In view of the fragile ceasefire between Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia, the USA is calling for direct talks between Israel and Lebanon at the highest level. "Lebanon is at a crossroads. Its people have a historic opportunity to reclaim their country and shape their future as a truly sovereign, independent nation," said a statement published on Platform X by the US embassy in Beirut.

A ceasefire is currently in place in the conflict between the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and Israel. This was announced by US President Donald Trump in mid-April following talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. In reality, however, there are almost daily attacks by both sides. The Israeli armed forces are also active with ground troops in southern Lebanon. Lebanon itself is not officially a party to the conflict.
"A direct meeting between President Aoun and Prime Minister Netanyahu - facilitated by President Trump - would provide Lebanon with the opportunity to obtain concrete guarantees of full sovereignty, territorial integrity, secure borders, humanitarian and reconstruction assistance, and the full restoration of Lebanese sovereignty over every inch of its territory - guaranteed by the United States," the letter from the US embassy continued.
