The USA is suspending the announced tariffs against Mexico for the time being. "The tariffs will now be suspended for one month," announced Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum after a phone call with US President Donald Trump on the X platform.

Trump also confirmed the suspension of tariffs on Truth Social. Sheinbaum reported a "good conversation". It had been agreed to suspend the announced tariffs of 25 percent on all Mexican products for a month.

"We had a good conversation with President Trump in which we were very respectful of our relationship and our sovereignty; we reached a number of agreements," she said. For example, she had agreed with the Republican that Mexico would reinforce the northern border with 10,000 National Guard soldiers "to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, especially the trafficking of fentanyl." The United States, on the other hand, is committed to fighting the arms trade.

Trump is not only criticizing trade imbalances. He is also using the threat of punitive tariffs to get Mexico to take tougher action against migration and the drug cartels.

Mexico is the USA's most important trading partner. More than 80 percent of Mexico's exports go to its neighboring country. Thousands of companies and millions of jobs depend on it.
