Pope Francis has died of a stroke. The Vatican announced the cause of death in the evening. The stroke suffered by the 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church in the early morning led to a coma and heart failure, according to the statement following the official announcement of his death. The statement also pointed out that Francis suffered from several pre-existing conditions.

Francis died on Easter Monday in his Vatican residence. "This morning at 7.35 a.m., the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the Father's house," the Vatican statement said. Francis was at the head of around 1.4 billion Catholics around the world for more than a decade. He was also Bishop of Rome and head of state of the Vatican.
Francis was hospitalized for 38 days in the spring due to pneumonia. His doctors later reported that his life was in danger several times due to shortness of breath. Most recently, Francis returned to his residence in the Vatican. His doctors ordered him to rest. In the days before his death, he repeatedly appeared in public unannounced, but appeared weakened.
