According to the Vatican, the night in hospital went "well" for Pope Francis. The 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church slept and is resting, a spokesperson for the Holy See said in the morning. Francis has been receiving treatment at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome for ten days. Regarding the course of the illness, the doctors' prognosis is still uncertain.

The Vatican reported in a statement on Sunday evening that the Pope's condition remains "critical". In addition, a "slight, incipient renal insufficiency" has now been diagnosed, which is currently under control. The pontiff is not out of danger, the Holy See spokesperson emphasized.

Francis is being treated in the clinic in the Italian capital for a respiratory infection with several pathogens and bilateral pneumonia. His condition had worsened in recent days: at the weekend he had an acute respiratory crisis, for which additional oxygen was administered.
