According to official reports, Pope Francis spent another night in hospital without any new complications. "The night passed calmly, the Pope is resting," said a brief statement from the Vatican in the morning. No further details were given about the 88-year-old's state of health. A new medical bulletin is to be published in the evening.

The head of the Catholic Church has been receiving treatment at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome for more than three weeks. The Pope is suffering from severe pneumonia. He has had several bouts of acute shortness of breath in the clinic. As a result, he has to be mechanically ventilated again and again via a mask covering his nose and mouth.

On Friday evening, the Vatican - as announced - had for the first time dispensed with the previously daily bulletin on his state of health. However, according to sources close to him, his condition remained stable throughout the day.
