"The Pope rested well during the night and woke up shortly after 8 a.m.," a brief statement from the Holy See said in the morning. The Vatican did not initially provide any further information on the 88-year-old's state of health.

On Tuesday, the Vatican reported that Francis' condition was stable again after a setback the previous day. He had had no further attacks of breathlessness and was fever-free, alert and oriented.

Nevertheless, he was supposed to sleep with a mask for "mechanical ventilation" on Wednesday night. During this non-invasive ventilation, a mask is placed over his nose and mouth. However, the Vatican did not provide any details about this therapy on Wednesday morning.

The head of the Catholic Church has been receiving treatment at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome for almost three weeks. According to the doctors, he is suffering from severe pneumonia on both sides. Since his admission on February 14, there have already been several complications. The doctors at the hospital are still reluctant to give a prognosis on the further course of the disease.
