"The Pope slept all night, now he continues to rest," a brief statement from the Vatican said in the morning. The Vatican did not provide any further information on Francis' state of health.
On Monday, the 88-year-old again experienced severe breathing difficulties - this time twice in succession. Once again, Francis had to be mechanically ventilated. These two attacks of breathlessness were caused by an accumulation of mucus in the bronchi and bronchospasm - a spasm of the muscles. Two lung endoscopies were necessary.
The head of the Catholic Church has been treated at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome for two and a half weeks. According to the doctors, he is suffering from severe pneumonia on both sides. Since his admission on February 14, he has had several attacks of respiratory distress. The doctors at the hospital are reluctant to give a prognosis on the further course of the disease.
