"The night passed calmly, the Pope woke up around 8.00 a.m.," it said in a brief statement from the Holy See in the morning. The Vatican did not initially provide any further information on the 88-year-old's state of health.

After more than three weeks in the Gemelli Clinic, the head of the Catholic Church is no longer in immediate danger according to the doctors treating him. This was announced by the Vatican on Monday evening. The doctors were satisfied with developments over the past few days. However, Francis must remain in hospital due to his pneumonia.

However, the doctors from the university hospital remained cautious. Due to the complex clinical picture, it remains necessary "to continue the pharmacological therapy in hospital for a few more days". They did not give a possible date for discharge. Bilateral pneumonia at such an advanced age is considered dangerous.
