According to official reports, Pope Francis spent another night in hospital without any new complications. "The night passed calmly, the Pope is still resting," said a brief statement from the Holy See in the morning. The Vatican did not initially provide any further information on the 88-year-old's state of health.

In the meantime, the head of the Catholic Church has been in the Gemelli Clinic in the west of Rome for almost three weeks. The Pope is suffering from severe pneumonia, which has affected both lungs. Francis has had several bouts of breathlessness, which is why he now has to wear a mask over his mouth and nose at night for mechanical ventilation. The doctors are reluctant to give a prognosis on the further course of the disease.
