In view of the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), the Vatican will in future have a commission to deal with the topic. Pope Leo XIV approved the establishment of the committee, which will deal with the effects of artificial intelligence on people and humanity as well as questions of human dignity. Representatives of several Vatican authorities are to sit on the commission, as announced by the Holy See.

The topic of AI is close to the Pope's heart. Leo repeatedly addresses AI - and its potential risks - in speeches and public appearances. Leo already put the topic of AI on the agenda at the beginning of his pontificate in May last year. He pleaded for a healthy alliance between technology and humanity that keeps an eye on the risks and dangers of AI.
First encyclical probably primarily on AI
Leo's first major landmark doctrinal letter is also likely to deal with this topic. According to the official news portal "Vatican News", this so-called encyclical is expected to be published towards the end of the month. According to several media reports, the working title of the encyclical is "Magnifica humanitas" (The Magnificent Humanity).
The task of the new commission will be to "facilitate cooperation and exchange between the members of the group with regard to information on activities and projects in the field of artificial intelligence, including guidelines for its use within the Holy See". Dialogue, community and participation should be promoted. A Vatican authority will coordinate the first year of its work.
