Pope Francis has suffered another setback in hospital. The 88-year-old had "two episodes of acute respiratory failure" in the afternoon, as the Vatican announced in the evening. As on Friday, the muscles in his respiratory tract had cramped, it said. "Two lung endoscopies were therefore carried out, during which a large amount of secretion had to be suctioned out." Francis was also given mechanical ventilation again.

The doctors were reluctant to give a prognosis on the further course of the disease. At the same time, however, it was emphasized: "The Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times." The head of 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide has been receiving treatment at Rome's Gemelli Hospital since mid-February. He is suffering from bilateral pneumonia.
