Rodríguez, who according to the constitution is supposed to take over the reins of government until new elections are held in the event of the head of state defaulting, called Maduro the "only president" of Venezuela and the US attack a "terrible stain" on bilateral relations. "We will never be slaves again," she said, calling the attack a violation of the UN Charter.
US President Trump: holding talks with the Vice President
According to US President Donald Trump, the US government wants to work with Vice President Rodríguez following the ousting of Venezuela's head of state. "We just had a conversation with her, and she's basically willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again, quite simply," he said at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
On Saturday night, the USA captured Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in a military raid and took them out of the country. They are to be tried in New York on charges including "drug terrorism". According to Trump, both are on the warship "Iwo Jima" on their way to New York.
