Following violence in southern Syria that has left dozens dead, the government in Damascus has announced a ceasefire. A "complete ceasefire is in place following an agreement with the dignitaries" in the town of Suwaida, announced Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Kasra.

"We will only respond to shelling and deal with attacks by banned groups," he told the state news agency Sana. This applies to "all units" of the Syrian government troops.

The troops have advanced in the south after violence broke out there between members of the Druze minority and Sunni Bedouin clans since Sunday. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 100 people were killed and around 200 others injured, including children.

Residents told the German Press Agency that the situation was "comparatively calm" after the government troops moved in. Residents had previously reported explosions and gunfire. The government troops treated the residents with respect, but continued to pursue the fighters. They had withdrawn from the city in vehicles in an easterly and southerly direction.
