EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sees opportunities in the fall of Syria's ruler Bashar al-Assad. However, this historic change in the region is not without risks, the German also wrote on X. Europe is prepared to support the preservation of national unity and the reconstruction of a Syrian state that protects all minorities.

Fighters from the Islamist militia Hajat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have reported the capture of the Syrian capital Damascus. Various rebel groups had previously taken control in other provinces. In many places, government forces withdrew without a fight. According to Russian reports, Assad fled abroad.
