"The European security order is being shaken, and so many of our illusions are evaporating," she said in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Europe is now called upon to take more responsibility for its own defense.

At the same time, von der Leyen warned urgently of the dangers posed by Russia. "Peace in our Union can no longer be taken for granted," she said. Putin has proven time and again that he is hostile. "He cannot be trusted, he can only be deterred."

Von der Leyen: Europe must step up its game

Von der Leyen pointed out that Russia spends more on armaments than Europe. There are increasing warnings in the ranks of Western nations about Russia's rapid armament with the possible intention of preparing an attack on NATO states.

"In these increasingly dangerous times, Europe must step up its game," said von der Leyen. She spoke to MEPs in support of a rearmament plan proposed by her Commission. Among other things, it provides for exemptions for EU states so that they can incur more debt for armaments. In total - in addition to existing defense spending - a three-digit billion euro sum is to be raised over the coming years.

The chairman of the largest political group in the European Parliament (EPP), Manfred Weber, criticized that the approach was not European enough. Among other things, he said that he would like to see some of the troops from EU member states wearing European flags on their uniforms. "This is not yet provided for in the plans from last Thursday," said Weber.
