Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has criticized the Israeli government for its plans to advance into the city of Gaza. German credibility as a global European player depends on the consistency of German policy - in the defense of international law, the rejection of terror and the protection of civilian life, he said at the Croatian ambassadors' conference in the capital Zagreb.

"In our view, the Israeli cabinet's decision to take over Gaza City and intensify ground operations does not further any of these goals," he criticized.

According to estimates, around one million people are crowded into the coastal city of Gaza. Israel is planning to evacuate the city before the new offensive. Hamas hostages are also believed to be in the city.
