Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit Washington this week for the second time since US President Donald Trump took office. A meeting between the two is planned for this Monday at the White House, a representative of the US government headquarters told the German Press Agency.

Trump had already received Netanyahu at the beginning of February - as the first foreign guest in his second term of office. It is yet another gesture of support for the right-wing prime minister, who has come under heavy international criticism for his conduct of the war in the Gaza Strip. Trump is known as a close ally of Netanyahu.

During Netanyahu's visit at the beginning of February, Trump shocked the world with an advance on the Middle East conflict: the 78-year-old announced unexpectedly and without foundation that the USA wanted to take control of the Gaza Strip and develop the war-torn Palestinian coastal region economically. The Palestinian civilian population was to be resettled in other countries in the region. Trump said that the Gaza Strip could thus become a "Riviera of the Middle East".
