According to the Associated Press (AP), US President Donald Trump has barred a reporter from the US news agency from covering an event at the White House.

The exclusion was justified by AP's refusal to follow the White House's choice of words, which had renamed the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America".

"It is alarming that the Trump administration is punishing AP for its independent journalism," said a statement from AP editor-in-chief Julie Pace. "Restricting our access to the Oval Office based on AP speech content not only seriously impairs the public's access to independent news, but simply violates the First Amendment," the statement continued.

The White House Correspondents' Association emphasized in a statement: "The White House cannot dictate how news media report, nor should it punish individual journalists for disagreeing with the decisions of their superiors." The association stands with the AP and calls on the White House to quickly correct its course.

The AP has a style guide, which sets out, for example, spelling, a certain choice of words or the avoidance thereof, as well as reporting principles that are used as a model by news media worldwide.

Trump has a long tradition of feuds with media organizations and individual reporters. During his first term in office, for example, he had the CNN reporter in the White House, Jim Acosta, removed from the microphone during a press conference after the journalist asked several critical questions.
