Against the backdrop of ongoing Russian attacks on the energy supply system, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has spoken out in favor of expanding a nuclear power plant in the west of the country. "Ukraine will be able to add two more reactor blocks to the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant and that is more than two gigawatts of electricity for Ukraine," he said in his evening video address. The parliament in Kiev had previously approved the purchase of two Soviet-design nuclear reactors from Bulgaria.

The expansion of the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant will allow Ukraine to manage without electricity imports in winter, Selensky assured. Of course, there is also hostility towards the project. "But these are the voices for whom cheap energy in Ukraine is simply unfavorable - they fill their pockets or those they depend on with more expensive energy than nuclear energy," Selensky rejected the criticism.

Ukraine has now lost a good half of its capacity due to the systematic Russian bombardment of energy plants. In addition, the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the most powerful nuclear power plant in Europe, located in the south-east of the country, was occupied by Russian troops shortly after the start of the war.

Heavy Russian shelling during the night

The constant Russian shelling was another topic of Zelensky's video message. According to him, Russia had attacked Ukraine the previous night with almost 20 missiles and 125 drones. It was only thanks to the use of air defense that the damage was not greater, he said. Kiev is doing everything it can to further strengthen its air defense.
