Against the backdrop of a corruption scandal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has announced a reshuffle at the top of the country's most important energy companies. "Parallel to the complete review of financial activities, a renewal of the management of these companies must begin," he wrote on Telegram. He had reached an agreement with head of government Yulia Svyrydenko on the next steps.

The conditions for a new supervisory board at Energoatom are to be created within a week, and the management board will also be completely renewed. In addition to Energoatom, there are also changes in the management of the state-owned hydropower operator Ukrhidroenergo, the operator of the gas pipeline system in Ukraine and the state-owned energy giant Naftogaz. Corresponding tenders have been scheduled.

Corruption scandal puts Selensky in trouble

The announcement is seen as a flight forward by Selenskyj. Energoatom is the company at the center of the corruption scandal. Up to 100 million in bribes are said to have been paid for the construction of protection systems for the energy infrastructure - two ministers have resigned over the affair. Two suspects, including a close confidant of Zelensky, have fled abroad.

It is the biggest corruption scandal in Ukraine since the start of the war. For the president, it is now a matter of distancing himself from the corrupt officials in his entourage - also to avoid jeopardizing further foreign aid for his war-torn country.
