Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized the delegation sent by Russia to Turkey to negotiate an end to the war.

"The level of the Russian delegation is a downright deception," Zelenskyi told the Turkish state news agency Anadolu ahead of a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.

Russian and Ukrainian representatives are due to meet for talks in Istanbul in the afternoon. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin had proposed the negotiations in the Turkish metropolis himself. However, his participation has been off the table since Wednesday evening.

A delegation led by Putin's advisor Vladimir Medinsky is taking part on behalf of Russia. According to Selenskyj, Ukraine will be represented by the foreign minister, officials from the presidential office as well as military and secret service representatives. The next steps should be determined after the talks with Erdogan.
