Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has officially appointed the head of his presidential office, Andriy Yermak, as chief negotiator for possible peace talks. The delegation also includes Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov and Yermak's deputy Pavlo Palissa. The presidential office in Kiev published Zelensky's corresponding decree.
Jermak and Sybiha could call in other experts, it said. Jermak is considered the most influential force in Ukrainian politics after his boss, the president.
Ukrainian team already negotiated with the USA
The four negotiators had already held talks with the USA in Saudi Arabia last week. This led to the resumption of US arms deliveries. Ukraine agreed to the US proposal of a 30-day ceasefire - if Moscow also went along with it.
Russia, however, is against an unconditional ceasefire. The Kremlin is also only treating the USA as a partner for a peace solution, not the Ukrainian leadership or the European states. Direct Ukrainian-Russian negotiations last took place in 2022, shortly after the start of the Russian invasion, but they ended inconclusively.
