Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has made it clear that he will not accept a peace solution if his country is not involved in the talks. When asked whether he could accept a deal that was negotiated without Ukraine, Zelensky said in an interview on US broadcaster NBC: "No!".

Ukraine needs security guarantees. "Words are not enough," he said. One such guarantee could be his country's membership of NATO. This would be the most favorable solution for all sides.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had said last week that the United States did not believe that NATO membership was a realistic outcome of a negotiated solution for Ukraine. President Donald Trump had also made similar comments.

"If we don't get security guarantees, then I don't think an economic agreement will work. Everything has to be fair," said Selenskyj. In his view, Russia's access to mineral resources in Ukraine, for example, would be dangerous. Rare earths could not only be used for cell phones or electric cars, but also for the construction of rockets.

Without strong guarantees, there is a threat of a Russian return to Ukraine, said Selenskyj. There is intelligence information that Russia is carrying out training measures for 150,000 soldiers, particularly on the territory of Belarus. "At the moment, knowing that he could not take us, we do not know where he wants to go. There are risks that this could be Poland or Lithuania, because we believe that Putin will wage war against NATO."
