Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has discussed the peace process for his country with US President Donald Trump's negotiators. Zelensky wrote on the X platform that special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Senator Lindsey Graham were present on the US side. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte also took part in the video link.

"Ukraine appreciates every effort by America to create a dignified peace," wrote Selensky in Kiev. It was agreed that the teams would continue to work on a document on US security guarantees for Ukraine in the coming days. "This is what can pave the way for a reliable end to the war."

The Ukrainian president did not give any details. He had recently reported pressure from the USA for Ukraine to vacate its last positions in the industrial region of Donbass in order to achieve peace, as demanded by Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov demanded in Moscow that Zelensky should make a decision on this today (Wednesday).

The Ukrainian head of state renewed his proposal for a ceasefire over Easter, according to the presidential office in Kiev. This could be a signal "that diplomacy can be successful". Moscow's stance is that a ceasefire can only take place once all conflict issues have been resolved.

Selenskyj: Ukraine must know how partners react

Selensky emphasized the importance of reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. "So that the Ukrainians clearly understand how the partners will respond in the event of renewed Russian aggression and what will actually deter Russia from aggression," he wrote on X. There were initially no comments on the conversation from the US side.

Prior to the switch, Selensky had coordinated with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. Russia has been trying to subjugate the neighboring country with a large-scale invasion for more than four years. Due to the Iran war, Trump's administration has recently paid less attention to Ukraine.
