Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has visited a section of the front near the heavily contested city of Pokrovsk in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. In videos published by the Ukrainian head of state on his Telegram channel, he can be seen decorating soldiers and holding a meeting at a command post.

The small town of Pokrovsk has been one of the focal points of Russian attacks since the summer of 2024. Some of the Russian troops are already south-west of the city, but have recently been unable to make any more territorial gains.

The complete conquest of the Donetsk region is one of Russia's war aims in the invasion that has been going on for more than three years. In addition, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin also announced the annexation of the Ukrainian territories of Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya in the fall of 2022 - although Russia still only partially controls them. Russia had already annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014.

According to media reports, Putin recently declared at a meeting with entrepreneurs that he would lay claim to further Ukrainian territories if Kiev does not agree to his current demands soon.
