According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Europe must be at the negotiating table in any peace talks between his country and Russia.

"Europe must be fully involved in peace negotiations and efforts to prevent future wars," Selensky wrote on Platform X after a conversation with Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Selensky is currently campaigning at the Munich Security Conference for further support for his country, which is under attack from Russia.

Europe, the USA and Ukraine must coordinate a unified defense and security strategy with a clear action plan before any negotiations, Selensky continued. There are concerns that Europe and Ukraine could be bypassed in peace talks between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

It is crucial "that we have the same idea of what a just end to this war should look like", said Zelensky after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. He appreciated France's commitment to the principle: "Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine." One of the most important prerequisites for a lasting and just peace is reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.

Selenskyj appreciates Trump's "determination"

Following a conversation with US Vice President J.D. Vance, Zelensky wrote that Ukraine was ready to work towards a genuine and guaranteed peace as soon as possible. "We greatly appreciate President Trump's determination, which can help end the war and bring about justice and security guarantees for Ukraine."

Ukraine has been resisting a Russian invasion for almost three years with Western help. Russia controls around a fifth of Ukraine's territory, including the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.
