According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine is bracing itself for even heavier Russian airstrikes during the current frost period. "There is information that there could be a new massive Russian attack tonight," warned Zelensky in his evening video message from Kiev. Citizens should pay attention to air alerts and take refuge in shelters.
"Russia is currently relying more on winter than on diplomacy, on ballistic missiles against our energy supply and not on work with America and agreements with President (Donald) Trump," Selenskyj said.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing almost everywhere in Ukraine from Friday. In Kiev and the northern part of the country, temperatures are expected to reach ten degrees Celsius or more for days on end. This will increase the pressure on the already hard-pressed supply of electricity, heat and water. Following an attack on Thursday night, the Dnipropetrovsk region is already experiencing the worst blackout in almost four years of war.
The president said he had discussed with head of government Yulia Svyrydenko that schools, offices and non-essential facilities could restrict operations over the next two weeks.
