The peace plan launched by the US administration envisages a period of 15 years with the possibility of an extension, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi told the state news agency Unian.
"I told him (US President Donald Trump) that we would very much like to look at the possibility of 30, 40 or 50 years," said Zelenskyi, reflecting the Ukrainian position. Trump had promised him to think about it.
Selensky justified the request to Trump for long-term security guarantees with the ongoing war against Russia.
"I told him that we are already at war and it has been going on for almost 15 years," said the Ukrainian head of state. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin gave the order to invade Ukraine in February 2022. However, Moscow had already annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea at the beginning of 2014.
At the same time, Russian-backed separatists also took power in parts of the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
In order to end the fighting, Russia is demanding, among other things, the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from both regions, a renunciation of NATO membership and a reduction in the size of the army in the neighboring country.
