Martin Pfister will make a statement on his candidacy at a media conference in the coming days, the Zug Center announced on Monday. He will not answer any questions before then.

At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, the Zug cantonal party said that Martin Pfister's experience as an executive politician and his extensive military knowledge as an officer were convincing. "We are convinced that he has what it takes to be a Federal Councillor," said Manuela Käch, member of the Zuger Mitte presidium.

Martin Pfister is 61 years old and has been a member of the Zug cantonal government as Director of Health since 2016. He was previously active as a managing director of associations. The father of four grown-up children studied history and German and is a qualified teacher. On the Zug parliamentary website, he describes his hobbies as hiking, jogging, culture and reading.

The Federal Council election will take place on March 12. It has been over 50 years since a person from the canton of Zug was last elected to the Federal Council. It was Hans Hürlimann (CVP), who held the office from 1974 to 1982.
