According to the authorities, the Dutchman was shot dead on Thursday in the town of Atizapán de Zaragoza near the capital Mexico City.

The 32-year-old was at the top of a wanted list of the European police authority Europol for drug smuggling from Brazil to the Netherlands. According to Europol, the man and his accomplices smuggled around 400 kilos of cocaine into Europe between 2014 and 2015. They hid the drugs in containers filled with pineapples.

According to the Europol website, the 32-year-old was sentenced to more than seven years in prison in October 2020. In order to avoid arrest by the authorities, the Dutchman reportedly used the fights between rival drug gangs, including the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, in the Mexican drug cartel stronghold of Culiacán last October to fake his own death.
