The Swiss air navigation service provider Skyguide recorded a net loss of almost 19 million Swiss francs last year. This was due to high investments in technical infrastructure. The previous year saw a profit of CHF 7.8 million.

2024 was a record year for flights, as skyguide announced on Wednesday. Air traffic control monitored over 1.3 million flights, even more than in the years before the coronavirus pandemic.

With 479,314 take-offs and landings, Swiss airports recorded 4.9% more movements than in 2023. Scheduled and business flights in particular increased. The number of military flights fell by 2% to 83,519.

545 million francs in operating costs

Operating income remained relatively stable at CHF 528 million, as skyguide writes. However, costs rose by CHF 26 million to over CHF 545 million. This relates to the stability and maintenance of the systems as well as regulatory requirements in the IT area. The fixed air navigation charges were unable to cover these costs.

Compared to the previous year, the punctuality of flights controlled by skyguide fell slightly from 97.7% to 95.3%. However, the figure is still well above the European average, it said.

Skyguide has 1500 employees at 14 locations. The company is majority-owned by the Swiss Confederation and has its headquarters in Geneva.
