The Swiss Federal Electricity Commission (Elcom) announced on Thursday that the current price trend on the market does not indicate an expected electricity shortage. Europe has large capacities at liquid gas terminals and the French nuclear power plants have a high level of availability.
However, the uncertain availability of gas in particular could have an impact on the stability of the electricity supply in an extreme scenario. This is due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the current low levels of gas in European storage facilities.
In the medium term, Elcom points to challenges in maintaining the transmission grid. Around sixty percent of the approximately 12,000 supporting structures are between fifty and eighty years old. Their modernization must move forward.
