  • OpenAI introduces the Advanced Voice Mode for its voice assistant, which offers new interaction possibilities through natural-sounding voice and sound effects.
  • Initial user reports on Reddit show impressive capabilities of the new mode, including storytelling and support for learning new languages.
  • Although there is no official information from OpenAI yet, Advanced Voice Mode is expected to be available to all users soon.

With the introduction of GPT-4o, OpenAI has gradually rolled out the voice assistant to its users. This makes it possible to converse with a natural-sounding voice and without a long delay. Now an update called Advanced Voice Mode is set to give the assistant even more capabilities.

A video from OpenAI demonstrates how Advanced Voice Mode can help users learn a new language, for example. According to a Reddit post, however, the new mode offers even more far-reaching possibilities.

The perfect sound effect for any conversation

Reddit user Rozzithecreator reports that he has already had two conversations with the advanced voice assistant. He recorded his second conversation and shared it on Reddit. In this conversation, ChatGPT tells a story in a natural voice and uses sound effects such as thunderstorms to emphasize the mood. The AI is therefore able to create these effects and incorporate them into the story in a targeted manner - a capability that the current version of the voice assistant does not have.

Other users also report sound effects in their conversations. For example, one user was playing a Star Wars role-playing game with the AI when ChatGPT suddenly made the sound of a blaster.

OpenAI wants even more time

It should be noted that these are user reports and not official information from OpenAI. A few days ago, OpenAI announced that the company needed more time before rolling out Advanced Voice Mode to users.

However, it is possible that the mode was already available to some users on a trial basis. It probably won't be long before we receive more official information from OpenAI about the improved voice assistant.

The introduction of Advanced Voice Mode could fundamentally change the way we interact with voice assistants. In particular, the ability to use sound effects and tell stories vividly could significantly expand the range of applications for voice AIs - from education and entertainment to new forms of digital communication.
