Armani, who died on September 4 at the age of 91, often spent his summer vacations on his estate on the island between Sicily and Tunisia in the Mediterranean. The Italian civil aviation authority ENAC welcomed the proposal, which was put forward by the island's local council and supported by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.

The designer used Pantelleria as a retreat. His estate consisted of seven "dammusi", traditional rural buildings made of white lava stone with domed roofs, surrounded by over 150 palm trees.

ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma explained that the renaming fits in with the plans to modernize the airport and promote tourism on the island. Pantelleria can be reached by air from Rome and Sicilian cities such as Palermo.

Armani was one of the most important fashion designers in the world for decades. After his early years working for other houses, he founded Giorgio Armani SpA in the mid-1970s. This was the nucleus of a group that is now worth many billions of euros. Initially, the money came from fashion, then also from accessories, perfumes and hotels.

Last year, Milan's Malpensa Airport was renamed after the Italian media entrepreneur and long-time Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who died in 2023. The government's decision sparked fierce controversy.
